Lost your car keys? Here's what to do
-
1
Check the obvious places
Pockets, bags, around the car and anywhere you've been today. A quick call to the last few places can save you the cost.
-
2
Don't tow it to the dealer yet
Dealers usually want the car brought to them and the key ordered in. That means paying for recovery, then waiting.
-
3
Get your price from your reg
We'll tell you if your car is dealer-only, and show you a price for your exact car and key before you pay.
-
4
Have your ID and logbook ready
Photo ID and proof you own the car, such as the V5C logbook, before any work starts. Then your new key is made at the car.
How much does it cost to replace lost car keys?
A rough guide to what a spare key costs in London, made and programmed at your car. Some cars cost more. Your exact price depends on your car, and you'll see it before you pay.
the spare key price
Prices include the key itself, travel and programming. Urgent jobs booked before 7am or after 9pm cost more.
If our locksmith can't do the job, you pay nothing. A call-out only applies if it turns out not to be a lock or key problem (for example a flat car battery), the car isn't the one you described and you decide not to go ahead at the new price, you can't show ID and proof you own the car or are allowed to use it, or a key you supplied can't be programmed to your car.
Skip the dealer
A new key shouldn't mean a trip to the garage and a week without your car.
Main dealer
- Usually means getting the car to them
- Keys are often ordered in, so you wait
- Fitted around their workshop hours
Haasty
- We come to your car, at home or work
- Usually cut and programmed in one visit
- Your price before you commit
A few newer cars can only get keys from the dealer. If yours is one of them, we'll tell you when you ask for a quote.
Found one key? Get a spare instead.
If you still have a working key, you need a spare, not a replacement. It usually costs a lot less, and you can book a time that suits you.

Lost car key questions
Can you make a new key if I've lost them all?
Yes. Our locksmiths make a new key at your car without the original, cut and programmed to it. A few newer cars can only get keys from the dealer. If yours is one, we'll tell you when you ask for a price.
How much does it cost to replace lost car keys?
Usually 1.5 to 2 times the spare key price for your car, because there's no key to start from. The price guide above gives rough estimates. Your exact price depends on your car, and you'll see it before you pay.
How long does it take?
It depends on the car. Once the locksmith is with your car, it can take from 30 minutes to a few hours.
My car is locked. Can you still do it?
Yes. Opening the car is part of the job when you've lost all your keys.
What do I need to show?
Photo ID and proof you own the car, such as the V5C logbook, before any work starts. It's how we make sure keys only go to the car's owner.
Can I claim on my insurance?
Some car and home insurance policies cover lost keys, so it's worth checking yours. Every booking comes with a receipt you can send to your insurer.
Can I track a lost car key?
Most car keys can't be tracked. If you'd put a tracker tag on your keys, check its app first. If not, a new key made at your car is the quickest way to get going again.
I've bought a genuine key from the dealer. Can you programme it?
Yes. If you've lost all your keys, the dealer will usually want the car brought to them, which means paying for recovery. Our locksmith programmes the dealer key where the car is parked, so you save the recovery cost and the hassle.
What if your locksmith can't do the job?
If our locksmith can't do the job, you pay nothing. A call-out only applies if:
- it turns out not to be a lock or key problem (for example a flat car battery)
- the car isn't the one you described and you decide not to go ahead at the new price
- you can't show ID and proof you own the car or are allowed to use it
- a key you supplied can't be programmed to your car
