the spare key price

Prices include the key itself, travel and programming. Urgent jobs booked before 7am or after 9pm cost more.

If our locksmith can't do the job, you pay nothing. A call-out only applies if it turns out not to be a lock or key problem (for example a flat car battery), the car isn't the one you described and you decide not to go ahead at the new price, you can't show ID and proof you own the car or are allowed to use it, or a key you supplied can't be programmed to your car.

Why prices vary from car to car

Programmed through the car's port

On many cars the new key is added through the diagnostic socket under the dashboard. It's the quicker job, so it sits at the lower end.

Module work

Some cars need the immobiliser module taken out, its data read and new data written in. More time and specialist tools, so a higher price.

The key you choose

Most keys we bring are aftermarket: made to work like your original, at a lower cost. A genuine dealer key is ordered by you from the dealer, and we programme it.

Down to one key? Get a spare now.

If you lose your last key, a replacement usually costs 1.5 to 2 times as much as a spare. A spare today is the cheapest way to avoid that.

Car key questions

Will the new key be the same as my original?

Your locksmith brings a key made to work like your original, with the same buttons, cut and programmed to your car. If you'd rather have a genuine dealer key, order it from your car's dealer (it can take up to 2 weeks) and book us once it arrives. We'll programme it at your car, so there's no need to get the car to the dealer.

What's the difference between a copy and a programmed key?

A cheap copy only clones your existing key, and some cars will stop accepting it later. A programmed key is registered with the car itself as a key in its own right, which is what we do.

Can I supply my own key?

Yes, but think twice with keys bought online. Aftermarket keys often look right but don't work with the car's system, and once cut they can't be sent back. If you supply a key and it can't be programmed to your car, a call-out of £120 applies (or your booking price, if lower). Our locksmiths bring a key they know is right for your car, included in the price.

I've bought a genuine key from the dealer. Can you programme it?

Yes. If you've lost all your keys, the dealer will usually want the car brought to them, which means paying for recovery. Our locksmith programmes the dealer key where the car is parked, so you save the recovery cost and the hassle.

Does the car need to be there?

Yes. The key is programmed to the car, so the locksmith comes to wherever it's parked. The car also needs power, so if the dashboard doesn't light up, tell us first.

What do I need to show?

Photo ID and proof you own the car, such as the V5C logbook, before any work starts. It's how we make sure keys only go to the car's owner.

Is it cheaper than the dealer?

Often, and without getting the car to them or waiting for a key to be ordered in. A few newer cars can only get keys from the dealer. If yours is one, we'll tell you when you ask for a price.

What if your locksmith can't do the job?

If our locksmith can't do the job, you pay nothing. A call-out only applies if:

  • it turns out not to be a lock or key problem (for example a flat car battery)
  • the car isn't the one you described and you decide not to go ahead at the new price
  • you can't show ID and proof you own the car or are allowed to use it
  • a key you supplied can't be programmed to your car
